I randomly decided to try Roots yesterday. I will say that the ambiance is good (the patrons). Like other reviewers I do feel the service is much to be desired. I felt like I was being a bother when I asked a quick question. The response was a very dry “have you guys started a tab yet?” I did then ask another employee about the wine options(a shorter lady) and she was a lot more helpful. The SA white wine blend that I was looking forward to trying wasn’t available so I tried others. I do like the idea of being able to self serve your wine but I think at least one employee should be around to answer questions especially if the wines on the menu aren’t necessarily what they have available. The Caesar salad was good. The pepperoni pizza not so much. It tasted like a frozen pizza from the supermarket baked and drizzled with hot honey. The truffle fries were chefs kiss. We tried to order several other menu items and were told they weren’t available. The table we were at was super wobbly. It’s a good place to meet with friends and/or have a date night.
Roots is one of the most underrated spots in Houston! Small and intimate place to take your spouse or significant other for good food, cozy ambiance, and wine tasting. I’m looking forward to going there again when in Houston
Charging automatic 20% gratuity on all tabs is crazy considering there is absolutely no service provided outside of the cooks and dropping your food off at the table. You even scan a QR code to order your food, you seat yourself and your wine pours are done by machine. They were out of several cheeses and we had to ask for the truffle fries we ordered which came out hot but under cooked. The atmosphere was cool but it is definitely a do it yourself bar. Interacting with your patrons or checking on them from time to time can go a long way. Here visiting family and friends from out of town.
Enjoyed my first visit here. Amazing wines & service. My only complaint is it was hotttt think there are A/C issues maybe…I ended up sitting outside in front of a fan, that was cooler than indoors. But I will be back again. Didn’t try the food but will eat next time.
Roots is a self service wine bar in the heights that’s perfect for your next date night! They give you a card and you’re free to pour as much as you’d like or just have a taste! They have so many options it a really cool concept. The food is incredible too. Love the fried chicken and the patatas bravas. The burger was really good too! Definitely worth your time to check this spot out :)
