Anytime weโ€™re craving fish and chips, Red Lion is where we go!! A friend introduced me to this pub years ago and when weโ€™re looking for a cozy spot, it often comes to mind. From appetizers, the samosas are delicious. Great beer selection, but beer could have been a little colder (American, I know!). It was busy on a Saturday night but our waitress was on it!! It was our first time trying the tikka masala and it was great.

Living in the Heights and being very proud of my British family and heritage my wife and I had to try The Red Lion so this past Friday was our date night and we absolutely enjoyed everything about this restaurant. It has a very real British ambience and I felt as if I was waiting on my cousin to walk in and join us. I have not ordered fish from a restaurant in over 40 years and I was very happy that I ordered the fish and chips. The Cod was perfectly battered, not to thick but expertly coated and fried to a crispy even coat of delicious flaky and fresh fish. The green peas were bright and not over cooked and the chips were a splendid version of the British French fries!! My wife had the steak and ale beef pie with beautifully prepared green beans that had that wonderful snap when eaten. The vast choice of beer was almost overwhelming but I think we made 2 great choices to have with the different meals. We shared the custard desert with a hot coffee to finish the experience. The only I would ask and being 100% honest is to clean the mens restroom. The odor in their was really bad and the floor was sticky throughout and was very surprising to me to be in that condition, I honestly felt bad to walk back to the table with the same shoes I walked in there with.. We absolutely will return for the "proper Sunday roast" as stated in the menu. My Nana used to make Yorkshire Pudding with gravy or "toad in the hole" every Sunday and I cant wait to try it there.

Atmosphere: love the weathered, tutor-style home look with the stained glass lamps and booths. Gives a proper English pub feel. Food: pretty lackluster, unfortunately. The only highlight was the fried cod from the fish and chips - it is really well cooked, fresh, and crispy. The chips (fries) are a bit soft and soggy, but the taste was okay. The lamb vindaloo meat was a bit chewy, and rice a bit undercooked. The naan is terrible. Taste was a 5/10. The punjabi eggrolls were absolutely deplorable. Chewy meat and just super salty. Skip them. Service: fine. Not the friendliest, but not unwelcoming. I had this pub on my visit list for several years, but it was a one time visit for me.

By far best pub food I've had in Houston. Ordered the Irish Beef & Guinness Stew with vegetables served inside Yorkshire Pudding. Portion was generous and delicious. Guinness on draught paired perfectly with stew. Can't wait to come back and try Brunch and other menu options.
