The Rice Box looks like something straight out of the future, and while it's best experienced in person, you absolutely have to visit at night to see the interior and exterior fully light up. But it’s not just about the futuristic aesthetic—they also serve up some of the best American-Chinese food in Texas. I tried the Chongqing Jumbo wings, Orange Chicken, Peppered Steak, egg rolls, and both the white and fried rice. They’ve recently started expanding to places like Austin, but I’m crossing my fingers that their next location is in the DFW area!
The Rice Box is always such a good experience every time we go. The vibe is super unique with that modern, neon-lit Hong Kong street feel, it’s definitely a spot that stands out in Houston. We ordered a mix of items and everything came out fresh and full of flavor. The wings were crispy with just the right amount of spice and crunch and the fried rice was packed with flavor without being too heavy. The General TSO chicken is my all time fav. It was saucy, tender and honestly one of the better versions I’ve had. Service was quick and the whole place has a cool, casual atmosphere that’s great for a laid back lunch or dinner. Perfect take out as well. Definitely a go-to when you’re craving Chinese comfort food with a fun twist.
Our first time here and we were very impressed! Atmosphere was cool with the neon all around and service was phenomenal. Parking was a bit tricky but we went around the corner and parked in the parking garage for the free 2 hour. Food was really good. We had the sweet & sour chicken (medium heat) with fried rice and egg roll and veggie fried rice (no spice) and egg roll. The absolute best egg roll I have ever had! S&S chicken was amazing and medium heat was perfect for the Cajun pallet.
I enjoyed the experience, the Mapo tofu was just amazing!!!! The fried rice as well. I fried tofu from the Orange option was not was great though, I have tried better fried tofu (too much bread? I don’t know) However, the menu (even though is full of information), doesn’t tell you what is vegan or vegetarian. As a vegan was weird, specially when the waiter told me that the fried tofu wasn’t vegan because was cooked in seed oils… they should use some symbol as many other places. They personal should know about the difference between vegan, vegetarian, and omnivore, specially in a restaurant. I would love to come back, I hope the menu could be updated to check really how many plant based options are there.
Another subpar and disgusting meal from The Rice Box through Uber Eats. I’m officially done. I spent nearly $50 on what was supposed to be orange chicken and fried rice with shrimp, vegetables, and extra egg. What I received was honestly one of the most suspicious-looking “chicken” entrees I’ve ever eaten. It tasted like frozen grocery store chicken nuggets tossed in sauce. Absolutely unacceptable for the price. The fried rice was just as disappointing (oily, hard, no vegetables, shrimp and mystery chicken scattered throughout) and no extra egg at all despite paying for it. At this point, I truly believe some restaurants have completely different standards for takeout and delivery orders versus dine-in customers. The quality was terrible, the food looked careless, and the entire experience felt like a waste of money. Save your money and dine in elsewhere. I will never order from here again, and honestly, I’m done with food delivery altogether.
